Job Description

Small, private high-end hunter-jumper stable in Austin, TX where the horses’ health and happiness are of utmost importance. We require a focus on safety and physical and mental wellbeing for children and horses, as well as farm upkeep (incl. keeping barn and adjacent horse related structures clean and organized) to maintain the property to the highest standard. Excellent communication skills to develop and maintain rapport with horse owners and provide top notch customer service and animal care in and around the barn as requested.

Job Requirements

The care of the horses is the top priority.  The candidate absolutely must be passionate about horses. We are looking for an experienced groom with excellent horsemanship who is hard-working, takes initiative and possesses a positive attitude. The candidate must be honest, responsible, trustworthy, independent, and confident around large and small animals.  Willingness to care and attend to other barn animals on property is a plus.  We seek an organized and dedicated team player who communicates well with others and is willing to take instruction when required. 

Extensive experience in grooming and horse handling, and can include:

·       Routine daily horse handling care of a range of horses, ensuring exceptional high standards.

·       Responsible for day and night checks monitoring horses for any medical issues, abnormalities,     or unusual behaviors taking notice of clinical signs or symptoms of well-being or health issues.

·       Grooming and tacking up (including booting, wrapping with polo wraps and under bandages,    appropriately tacking up each horse per its individual needs

·       Caring for horses after training sessions (e.g. untacking, rinsing, bathing, hand walking, poulticing, soaking and icing if required)

·       Manage individualized feeding schedule; Mixing feeds and supplements (3x per day)

·       Fresh water in stalls & paddocks daily

·       Oversee turnout schedule and provide hands-on turnout assistance, (booting, blanketing based on horses’ needs and temperature, pest control, etc.)

·       Cleaning, organizing, and putting away equipment and tack.

·       Stall, paddock, and arena mucking/cleaning (2-3 x per day)

·       Soap wash stall and paddock buckets (3x per week)

·       Hand walking in a productive and safe manner.

·       Setting up jumps at ring

·       Experience with operating tractors, ATV, dragging and watering

·       Identifying farm repairs

·       Show grooming experience is a plus, including: clipping, braiding, managing horses during the shows, post show maintenance

·       Knowledge and experience to recognize common equine diseases, conditions, illness, and ailments.

·       Provide equine first aid treatment, bandaging or special services as needed.

·       Provide support in emergencies. Communicate with trainer/owner and hold for veterinarian as required.

·       Assist in maintaining accurate veterinary and health records for trail horses.

·       Assist in administering parasite control for horses 2-3 times/year as instructed by Veterinarian.

·       Assist with annual or bi-annual (Spring & Fall) Veterinary maintenance appointments for vaccinations and dental work.

Additional Requirements

Must be eligible to work in the U.S.
Must have valid driver’s license; experience driving trailer is a plus
Must pass background and drug screening
Nonsmoker preferred
