In front of a roaring home crowd at the Longines Tops International Arena in Valkenswaard, the Netherlands, Kevin Jochems (NED) rose to the occasion, seizing victory in Saturday’s CSI5* 1.50m jump-off class with Shanroe Peeters (Dallas VDL x Condios).
Last to go in the jump-off of eleven, Jochems produced a round of both speed and precision, guiding the 11-year-old gelding Shanroe Peeters to the winning time of 42.38 seconds.
The win came at the expense of his compatriot, Willem Greve, who had been leading aboard Highway TN N.O.P. (Eldorado vd Zeshoek x Chellano) but had to settle for second with a time of 42.71 seconds. Third place went to Sanne Thijssen (NED) with her veteran partner Con Quidam RB (Quinar Z x Cardino).
Kevin Jochems was visibly elated after his win, saying: “To be honest I didn't see anyone else’s jump-off, I just asked Harrie [Smolders] what the possibilities were with the course. I did my best - and it was just enough! I actually own this horse together with my best friend, we’ve had him since he was seven, so it is great to have this win together.”
The second CSI5* class of the day, the 1.45m presented by Roelofsen, went to Henrik von Eckermann (SWE) and Qasirah van de Reistenhoek (Emerald x Kannan) ahead of Giacomo Casadei (ITA) and Corradiena van't Klein Asdonk Z (Cornet Obolensky x Andiamo Z) in second and Giulia Martinengo Marquet (ITA) aboard Captain Morgan Weering Z (Carrera VDL x Arezzo VDL) in third.
