Beneath the towering trees of Chapultepec Park, the Longines Global Champions Tour of Mexico delivered another unforgettable day of world-class sport as the CSI5* 1.55m Banorte Trophy unfolded in front of a passionate crowd at Campo Marte. The sprawling grass arena set the stage for a class that combined technical nuance with all-out speed, as 45 of some of the world’s best horses and riders went head-to-head.
In the end, it was Mexico’s own Eugenio Garza Perez who rose to the occasion, sending the home crowd into raptures with a sensational jump-off round aboard Chalouries PS (Chacco-Blue x Baloubet du Rouet). Stopping the clock in 36.55 seconds, his time proved unbeatable despite a stacked field of challengers.
“It is just such an incredible feeling to win here at one of the best shows in the world with the crowd behind you. You can feel them pushing you every step of the way. Gracias Mexico,” the happy winner said.
Clear rounds came thick and fast in the opening phase, underlining the extraordinary depth of talent in the field. The home crowd found their voice early, erupting as Eugenio Garza Perez and Nicolas Pizarro delivered faultless performances, both beating the clock and leaving every rail intact to secure their places in the jump-off.
With 14 pairs advancing to the jump-off, fireworks were promised – and delivered. One by one, some of the fastest horse-and-rider combinations in the sport stepped into the arena, pushing the pace to its limits. Eventually, Cian O'Connor (IRL) and Genghis Khan (Kannan x Diamant de Semilly) finished second, followed by Simon Delestre (FRA) on Olga van de Kruishoeve (El Torreo de Muze x Nabab de Reve) in third, Piergiorgio Bucci (ITA) aboard Cortez van't Klein Asdonk Z (Cornet Obolensky x Andiamo Z) in fourth and Abdel Saïd (BEL) with Wathnan Zasou vom Claashof (Zinedine x Lord Z) in fifth.
