Edited press release from Longines Global Champions Tour
The race for the coveted 2024 Longines Global Champions Tour-title is about to reach new heights as the series makes its way along the beautiful French Riviera to the city of Cannes for the seventh leg of the 2024-season.
The entry field for Cannes boasts an impressive nine LGCT Championship titles among the riders, including two-time champion Edwina Tops-Alexander (AUS), three-time champion Ben Maher (GBR), two-time champion Scott Brash (GBR), and two-time champion Harrie Smolders (NED).
Maikel van der Vleuten (NED) – last year’s LGCT Grand Prix winner in Cannes – will be aiming for back-to-back wins, while the current LGCT ranking leader Eduardo Alvarez Aznar (ESP) won’t be present this week – leaving the door open for Christian Kukuk (GER), currently in third place and in search of his second LGCT Grand Prix win this season.
On flying form this season, Gilles Thomas (BEL) is closing in on the top spot after his win in the LGCT Grand Prix of Shanghai. He will be joined by names such as the 2019 LGCT Grand Prix of Cannes winner Niels Bruynseels (BEL), Christian Ahlmann (GER), Daniel Deusser (GER) and Janne Friederike Meyer-Zimmermann (GER), living legend John Whitaker (GBR) and Henrik von Eckermann (SWE) – the current world number one.
