As the third pair out in Saturday night’s CSI5* 1.55m UBS Challenge at CHI Geneva, Austria’s Max Kühner and the 11-year-old mare Greece 5 (Mylord Carthago x Quinar Z) crossed the finish line in 67.73 seconds to take an early lead that held all the way and the first international win of their relatively new partnership.
The hosts came in strong in Saturday night’s feature class with Edouard Schmitz (SUI) on Quno (Quo Vados x Cash and Carry) finishing second after posting a clear round in a time of 68.01 seconds as the second horse-and-rider combination in the arena at Palexpo. Pius Schwizer (SUI) with PSG Starlight (VDL Zirocco Blue x Casaretto) slotted into third when the clock stopped on 68.29, while Gaëtan Joliat (SUI) on Chelsea Z (Chellano Alpha Z x Cicero Z) and Guillaume Gillioz (SUI) aboard Remix (Quidam de Revel x Come On) filled up the top five in fourth and fifth respectively.
“Greece is a new horse for me,” Kühner told World of Showjumping afterwards. “She was already super successful with Teike Carstensen. I am very happy to have her and to get to know her a bit better. I honestly did not expect to win, it was a nice surprise. She is a very fast horse, she is easily fast between the fences, so it was enough that I just had a normal round and did nothing crazy – it was good enough today.”
