Sweden’s Evelina Tovek and Cortina (Contendro I x Waechter) won Tuesday’s CSIO5* 1.45m STAWAG opening jumping competition at the 2023-edition of CHIO Aachen. As the jumpers took to the vast grass arena for the first class of the week at the Soers, most of them took the opportunity to school around but a few opted for a more speedy approach and one of them was Tovek with her 14-year old mare who blazed around to clock a time of 60.26 seconds – good enough for the win.

“Cortina loves this ring,” Tovek told World of Showjumping after her victory. "I remember when we were here the last time in 2019, she won back then as well. She is amazing and has a big heart. She is always fighting and gives her best every time. It is nice to win on the first day and have the feeling that I have the right rhythm you need in this ring. It is a good start!"

Germany’s own Maurice Tebbel and Quasi Top (Quasimodo van de Molendreef x Graf Top) finished as runners-up in 61.70 seconds, followed by Sweden’s Jens Fredricson and Diarado's Rose Elith (Diarado x Cardento) in third in 61.91. Germany’s Daniel Deusser and Narcos v. Smidshoeve (Toulon x Thunder van de Zuuthoeve) finished fourth, followed by Brazil’s Rodrigo Pessoa and Quick Step (Quintender 2 x Calido I) in fifth.
