The now 15-year-old mare Cheppetta (Chepetto x Cash), who in 2022 won the CSI5* Hermés Grand Prix in Paris with Kevin Staut in the saddle, will in the future focus on her breeding career. Prior to Staut, Cheppetta was successful with Celine Schoonbroodt-de Azevedo in the saddle as well as Martin Fuchs.

“I bought Cheppetta at Filipe and Celine Azevedo’s stables,” Virginie Couperie Eiffel tells World of Showjumping. “She had arrived there from America, where she had been sold as an 8-year-old after having jumped during the Nations Cup Final in Barcelona with Martin Fuchs. However, when the woman who had bought her stopped riding, Cheppetta was sent to Azevedo to be sold. When I was there to look at horses, and I saw her, it was love at first sight! We bought her together with Azevedo, and Celine got the ride on her. Directly, they were placed at the Longines Masters in Paris in the two-star Grand Prix. Cheppetta had a great career with Celine, the highlight being placed second in the Longines Global Champions Tour Grand Prix of Paris in 2019. It was so special; she got the wild card to compete at the show, and to see my own mare place second at my show Paris Eiffel Jumping was a fabulous memory and a fantastic result.”

In 2020, Kevin Staut took over the reins on the mare and the two went on to win the CSI5* Hermés Grand Prix in Paris in 2022. Now, Cheppetta has returned to Couperie Eiffel’s yard Chateau Bacon near Bordeaux and at the beginning of May, she made an appearance at CSI2* Grimaud with Laura Rayjasse in the saddle. “We want to be gentle with her; she is in good shape, and she enjoys competing,” Couperie Eiffel explains. “That is why my rider Laura – who has competed with her previously – jumped with Cheppetta in St. Tropez. As long as she shows us that she wants to compete, she can keep going – however, at what height, we don’t know.”

While the plan is to breed with Cheppetta, Couperie Eiffel is adamant on not interfering too much with nature and wants to wait until Cheppetta is ready to be inseminated. “We want Cheppetta to be ready and keep her happy, and that is why we have decided to keep competing her a little bit while we wait for the right moment to inseminate her,” Couperie Eiffel says. “She is happy, she goes in the field at home. If she shows us that she wants to stay in competition for longer, we will see what happens; I believe she will tell us. She is in great shape, she has a big heart; she will let us know. She is a special mare and has a special place in the hearts of her riders – both Celine and Kevin love her.”
