Set against the Caribbean-like blue water of Lake Michigan, the Traverse City Horse Shows (TCHS) have become a focal point of the North American equestrian calendar. Set just south of the Canadian border, TCHS is more than a competition—it’s where athletes and horse sport fans alike come together to experience world-class show jumping in a dynamic summer circuit. Offering 12 weeks of FEI competition, the season includes a new CSIO3* Nations Cup, the FEI North American Youth Championships for dressage and jumping as well as back-to-back five-stars in to conclude the season.
A stage for show jumping’s best
TCHS is home to some of the sport’s most prestigious events, including Major League Show Jumping, the Longines FEI Jumping World Cup™ CSI5*-W and one of the most coveted American prizes in the American Gold Cup, celebrating its 55th year. Riders and horses compete on meticulously maintained surfaces, including all-weather GGT footing and the state-of-the-art Ebb-and-Flow system in the Turtle Creek Casino & Hotel International Grand Prix Ring.
“I have been coming here for 16 years,” said two-time winner Shane Sweetnam. He won the 2024 American Gold Cup with his Paris Olympic mount James Kann Cruz. “The American Gold Cup is one of the biggest grand prix in America, and it’s an honor to win it. It has grown and grown, and the public have become more knowledgeable in the area as well. The crowds are great; they know what’s happening, they know when to cheer or not to cheer, and luckily for us the show jumping is growing here all the time.”
The summer circuit begins with the Traverse City Spring Series presented by Turtle Creek Casino & Hotel, running June 4–23. This three-week series features two CSI3* events and one CSI4*, setting an exciting tone for the summer. The Great Lakes Equestrian Festival (July 2–August 10) spans six weeks and features four CSI3* events, a Nations Cup CSIO3*, and a CSI5* marking the return of Major League Show Jumping to Northern Michigan. The season culminates in the Tournament of Champions (September 3–15), with a CSI3*, Longines FEI Jumping World Cup™ CSI5*-W–Traverse City North American League (NAL) Qualifier, and the historic American Gold Cup CSI5* to conclude the year in dramatic style.
Designed for performance and comfort
TCHS is built for high-performance sport and the well-being of both horses and riders. Over $25 million in recent investments have enhanced every aspect of the facility, from permanent stabling and lavatories to the bridle paths that connect the showgrounds. Cutting-edge footing systems ensure peak performance and safety for horses, while spectators enjoy state-of-the-art video boards in multiple arenas and a VIP Club with premier views of the action.
Traverse City is more than a world-class venue; it’s a destination that offers something for everyone. With July highs averaging 75°F, the temperate climate is ideal for human and equine athletes. Beyond the showgrounds, visitors can explore Traverse City’s charming downtown, renowned culinary scene, and countless outdoor activities—creating an exceptional experience for competitors and families alike.
“I love Traverse City,” said five-time FEI World Cup™ Finals athlete Katie Dinan after winning two consecutive CSi3* grand prix during the Traverse City Spring Series “We’re here to focus on the show but you can’t help but enjoy being in a nice town by the water with perfect weather. Northern Michigan is excited about the horse show and coming here. It’s always nice when the horse show is embraced by the community.”
In just over a decade, TCHS’s reputation has stretched far beyond North America, welcoming riders from across the globe to compete at the highest level in a stunning setting. The venue has welcomed athletes from 48 U.S. states and 29 countries, showcasing a diverse and competitive field across all levels.
