Just like last year, it was Gert Jan Bruggink that went out on top in the concluding CSI3* Grand Prix at the 2016 Z-Tour in Lanaken. Riding Vampire (Marome NW x Voltaire), the Dutch rider was last out in the jump-off and snatched the win from Andreas Schou.

It was not an easy track that waited for the riders, that counted a little over fifty in total. Set at 1.50m it was big enough, as well as quite delicate with the penultimate line causing the most problems with an oxer followed by four strides to a double of verticals and then five strides to a square and wide oxer. The time allowed also played a part, with four riders being clear on the fences but adding a time fault.

In the end seven riders moved on to the jump-off. The first one out was Denmark’s Andreas Schou on the 11-year-old Allstar (Oklund x Peter Pan), who set a good time to beat in 40.94 seconds.

Frank Schuttert was next to go, and was faster aboard Go Easy de Muze (Vigo d’Arsouilles x For Pleasure) in 38.31 seconds but a rail on the final Zangersheide oxer fell to the ground. Douglas Lindelöw went for a safe round, and finished with three time penalties on Balou’s Lady (Balou du Rouet x Lasangos) – which in the end proved to be good enough for third place as Helena Persson, Albert Zoer and Jörne Sprehe all had faults around the shortened track slotting in behind Schou, Lindelöw and Schuttert.

As last to go, Gert Jan Bruggink had the win within reach. Always a danger against the clock, Bruggink set off in a high pace from the beginning aboard his 13-year-old gelding to shave off an incredible 1.8 seconds on Schou’s time stealing the victory for a second consecutive year.
