Very sadly, French rider Simon Delestre has today announced that his horse Ryan des Hayettes will be unable to compete at the Olympic Games in Rio.

The 11-year-old gelding, that won individual bronze at the 2015 European Championships, has sustained a small injury that will prevent him from competing at the Games. Ryan des Hayettes and Delestre were considered one of the favorites for a medal in Rio, and the loss must come as a big blow for the French team that will have to do without one of their very best pairs.

On his official Facebook page, Delestre explains the situation:

"It's with deepest regret that I announce the withdrawal of Hermes Ryan from the Olympic Games. The last examinations have revealed a micro-fracture of the hock. An unfortunate injury that ends all my Olympic dreams, and those of Hermes Ryan's family, but our priority is his health. The entire team will take care of him so that he comes back in perfect shape for the next major events. I'll support my teammates of the French team along their way through these Olympic Games."

Philippe Rozier travelled to Rio as the French reserve with Rahotep de Toscane, and will take over for Delestre.
