The year in review 2016

World of Showjuming asked German maestro Marcus Ehning, Jessica Springsteen’s show groom Esther Bukkems and Belgium’s 2016 Olympic contestant Jerome Guery about their best sporting memories from 2016:

Marcus Ehning:

“My best memory from 2016 is the 3rd of September, when our son Lyas was born! Sport wise I would have to chose the Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup Final in Barcelona, and the jump-off there [Note from editor: Marcus secured the victory for Germany in a jump-off against Great Britain]. It was an emotional moment as it was Ludger’s last appearance on the German team, so I really wanted this win."

Esther Bukkems:

"If it would be for me personally, it would be Jessica and Cynar winning the Saugerties $1 Million Grand Prix. It was Jessie’s first five-star Grand Prix win, Cynar’s first five-star win and for us as a whole team the first five-star Grand Prix win together. I don’t think anything can top that.

And two shows later in Tryon – in the first five-star Grand Prix after the one they won – the two finished 2nd.

If I had to pick one more, it would be the Longines Global Champions Tour Grand Prix in Valkenswaard. The whole summer we had bad luck with having the last fence down in the first round, and then later in the summer it changed to the second round. Valkenswaard was our last show before we headed back to USA, and there Jessie pulled off three great clear rounds with Cynar in the Grand Prix finishing fourth!”

Jerome Guery:

“2016 was an exceptional year for me.

First of all, I have a very good memory from the victory in the five-star Longines Grand Prix of La Baule with Grand Cru van de Rozenberg, which will obviously be a moment of my career that will always stay with me. Secondly, this year was also exceptional for me because of the Olympic Games. It was my first Olympics, and it was an incredible and unforgettable experience. To share it with all the world's best athletes regardless of discipline was something very special.

I also would like to pay tribute to the animals we are so lucky to do this sport with: The horses. We live with these amazing creatures every day, and they help us create unforgettable experiences that last a life-time. I hope that this continues, and that we can all help to ensure that we can make more such moments together with the focus on our friends – which are the horses.”
