Swiss rider Martin Fuchs and the 10-year-old KWPN stallion Chaplin (Verdi x Concorde) secured a home victory in the CSI5* Longines Grand Prix of Zürich on Friday. It was the first five-star Grand Prix win for the couple, that formed a partnership last summer.
Only three of the 43 pairs in the 1.55m Grand Prix worth 100 000 CHF produced double clears, with Fuchs being the fastest at 36.96 seconds. With a time of 37.29 seconds, Colombia's Carlos Enrique Lopez Lizarazo finished as runner-up on his La Coruna World Cup-winner Admara (Padinus x Murano).
It was a good night for the hosts, as Paul Estermann took the third place for Switzerland on Lord Pepsi (Böckmann's Lord Pezi x Santander H) and Christina Liebherr fourth on L.B. Eagle Eye (Darco x Cento) – the latter with the fastest time of the class but on the expense of four faults.
Earlier in the day, Ireland's Billy Twomey won the CSI5* 1.45m Prize of the Top 40 aboard the 13-year-old Ardcolum Duke (Gypsy Duke x Clover Hill). Carlos Enrique Lopez Lizarazo was also in the ribbons here, riding Cuplandra (Upgrade x Metall) into second place with 1.58 seconds separating them from the winner. Third was Leopold van Asten on VDL Groep Miss Untouchable (Chacco-Blue x Aldatus).
