In Waregem, a busy international weekend concluded with the CSI5* Grand Prix, worth 270,000 Euro, that saw home hero Niels Bruynseels and the feisty 10-year-old chestnut mare Lady Cracotte (Quaprice x Galoubet A) go to the top.

A total of 42 combinations entered the ring for this 1.60m Grand Prix, and it became a real thriller.

The Belgian audience was craving for a home combination in the jump-off, and the first to deliver was Jérôme Guery that entered the ring with Garfield de Tiji des Templiers (Quasimodo Z x Goldspring de Lauzelle). Olivier Philippaerts and Pieter Devos looked to be joining in, but unfortunately both had the last fence down. Nicola Philippaerts and Niels Bruynseels however jumped clear, both joining Guery in the jump-off against seven other riders.

The first rider entering the ring for the jump-off was Turkey’s Derin Demirsoy and Harry K (Equest Carnute x Robin Z II), but unfortunately yesterday’s winner had two poles down on his way around the shortened track this time around.

Ireland’s Denis Lynch was the first rider to produce a clear round in the jump-off. Aboard The Sinner (Sanvaro x Landgold 3), Lynch finished in 45,22 seconds putting some pressure on the combinations to come. Polish rider Jaroslaw Skrzyczynski clearly wasn’t impressed however as he and Chacclana (Chacco-Blue x Capilano) kept the zero as well, and managed to go even faster in 41,72 seconds.

Then it was up to Jérôme Guery and Garfield de Tiji des Templier that went quicker than the speed of light, to give the audience of Waregem some real value for their ticket money. Unfortunately the risk came on the expense of a rail down, and the Belgian rider eventually ended up 6th.

France’s Simon Delestre and Chesall Zimequest (Casall x Concerto 4) are one of the fastest pairs in the world, and they managed to keep the zero on the scoreboard as well and finished in 40,57 seconds – taking over the lead from Skrzyczynski.

The last two riders in the ring represented the hosts, and hopes were high of a home win. Nicola Phillipaerts went very fast with H&M Harley vd Bisschop (Dulf vd Bisschop x Coronado), but the BWP gelding unfortunately hit two fences.

As last to go, Niels Bruynseels took all the risks and succeeded – crossing the finish line in 39,85 seconds, a time well worthy of his brand new BMW that he could drive home from Waregem as part of his first prize.
