Ludger Beerbaum has today announced that his top mare Chiara 222 (Contender x Coronado 3) has passed away.

On their website and social media channels, LB Stables has shared the following statement: "Sad news from our stable. Chiara passed away this morning. Four weeks after a colic surgery, her condition worsened so drastically that we, together with her team of veterinarians, decided with her best interest in mind that she would be put to sleep. Ludger said: "The decision hits hard. Chiara was much more to me than a sports partner"."

Together, Beerbaum and the 16-year-old mare have had eight years of success. The pair won the CSI5* Grand Prix of Chantilly in 2016, the CSI5* Grand Prix of Doha in 2016 and 2014, the CSIO5* Grand Prix of Mannheim in 2015 and the CSI5* Grand Prix of Donetsk in 2013. Last year they took five-star wins in Valkenswaard, Verona and Doha while in March this year they topped a CSI5* 1.60m class in Doha. Beerbaum and Chiara contributed to much German team-success over their years together, such as the silver medals at the European Championships in 2013 and 2015. In 2014, the pair were Vice Champions at the World Cup Finals in Lyon.

Our thoughts go out to everybody at LB Stables, and all those close to this wonderful mare.
