“For the mouth, prevention is the best. We use Bit Butter to prevent dry skin and cracking, latex on stronger bits or for sensitive mouths. If the mouth is irritated we change to a softer bit or hackamore. If needed, the cold laser can be used to encourage healing.”

“Not an easy situation, but if a sore mouth occurs you can use a “sponge bit” or take a big sponge that you can fix on a bridle. Mix hot water with salt and vinegar in a bucket and drop the sponge in it. Put the sponge in the mouth and repeat three times a day.”  

”Try to solve the problem first and check your bits. If the mouth still gets sore, I put honey on the bit and the sides, as well as Vaseline on the mouth area. After riding, I flush the mouth with saltwater. A laser helps to repair if needed.” 

“For cracks or splits, I use a tiny bit of Gastroguard. I know it is made for stomach ulcers, but this really heals any problems related to a sensitive mouth."

“My number one go to when it comes to a sore mouth is Calmoseptine ointment. I think it can only be bought in America, so I stock up! Also avoid using a bit for a few days depending on the situation. You can also put Vaseline on the side of the mouth to help avoiding bit frictions in the first place.”

“Vaseline as prevention if the horses are sensitive. If I need to treat the skin, I use a cream called Green Ointment.” 

“I use BoroStyrol mouth gel, which I get from the pharmacy.”

“Thankfully, I don’t have to deal with this problem so much thanks to Martin’s soft bit choices. However, if the situation does arrive a light layer of Sudocream is normally enough!”
