The organisers of the CES Valencia Spring Tour kept going with their international competitions the day after they were told by the FEI to cancel the rest of the event. On Saturday 20th of February, the FEI informed the organisers and onsite officials to cancel, but nevertheless the competitions continued on Sunday the 21st with three international young horse classes being completed.

“Following receipt of the detailed information sent to the FEI on Saturday 20 February, the FEI concluded that there was an outbreak of the neurological form of EHV-1 and immediately told Organisers and onsite Officials to cancel the rest of the event in Valencia,” a FEI spokesperson said to World of Showjumping. “On Sunday 21 February, as soon as the FEI learned that competition was still ongoing, the FEI Veterinary Director immediately sent a strong message to Valencia reinforcing the notification from the previous day that competition had to cease immediately.”

The EHV-1 outbreak in Valencia has according to numbers from the FEI so far claimed the lives of ten horses. The first recorded death came on 26th of February, when the FEI was advised that a horse had been euthanised at the veterinary hospital in Valencia due to EHV-1. While the situation in Valencia over the last few days seems to have improved – with less serious cases being reported – the veterinary team has stressed that it is important to be aware that the outbreak is not yet fully under control.

The organisers in Valencia have not responded to World of Showjumping's request for comment.
