Dominik Fuhrer was the surprise of the Swiss Championship this weekend, when he stepped to the top of the podium after three flawless rounds with the 10-year-old Ghost (Lord Z x Cantos).

Nobody expected the 32-year-old amateur rider and school teacher – who trains with Thomas and Martin Fuchs – to beat the Swiss elite riders, but that’s what Fuhrer did when winning the gold medal in Humlikon on Saturday.

Fuhrer stayed clear on the fences throughout the championship, and only received 0.5 penalty points for exceeding the time allowed in the final round to end of a score of 2.75.

“I wanted to take it step by step, or jump by jump, today,” said Fuhrer, who was very happy about his surprising victory. Fuhrer discovered his horse Ghost when he was five years old and has brought him to the top of the sport himself.

Pius Schwizer and Karel VDB (Darco x VDL Corland) – the leading pair coming into the final – took the silver medal, after finishing on four faults, while the bronze medal went to Alain Jufer and Dante MM (Diarado x Luxius) on a total score of 4.56.
