Thursday afternoon saw the conclusion of the first day of the 2021 Spruce Meadows Masters', with Nayel Nassar (EGY) taking home the CANA Cup championship cooler aboard Darry Lou (Tangelo van de Zuuthoeve x Nabab de Reve).

After riders took on the first course, designed by Leopoldo Palacios Jr. (VEN), only five returned for the jump-off. With a time allowed of 56 seconds and a 370m track, the pressure was on. With riders such as Eric Lamaze (CAN) and Kyle King (USA) riding for the championship cooler, the athletes knew that it was going to be a competitive jump-off.

Tiffany Foster and Hamilton (Quadros 3 x Acolord) finished with a clear round and a time of 47.83 seconds, which was good enough too put them into fourth place, while Kyle King placed third with his clear round in 43.06 seconds aboard Magic Mike (Zapatero x Indoctro). The top two placings came down to Lamaze and Nassar, with Nassar edging out Lamaze and Fine Lady 5 (Forsyth FRH x Drosselklang II) in the end by only 0.10 seconds.

Nassar's mount, Darry Lou, is the last horse to have won the coveted CP 'International' Grand Prix, part of the Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping, back in 2019 with his then-rider, Beezie Madden (USA). As Nassar mentioned in the press conference after today's win, the pressure is certainly on with this horse.

"It's pretty rare that the horse comes in as the defending champion, but not the rider, so, you know I'm just trying to keep my cool and give him the best ride that I can," said Nassar. He also spoke of some of the more technical aspects of piloting Darry Lou and told reporters that "it's all about keeping a level head, and making sure that, you know, you hit all of your bases and do your homework before you send them into a big class."
