The 100th edition of the Portuguese CSIO and fourth leg of the Longines EEF Nations Cup Series 2022 in Lisbon was won by the Irish team.

With Taylor Vard as Chef d’Equipe, the team consisting of Richard Howley on Consulent de Prelet Z  (Consulent Z x Fuego du Prelet), Jessica Burke on Namamia (Fantomas de Muze x Berlin), Kevin Gallagher on Ballypatrick Flamenco (Je t'Aime Flamenco x Cruising) and Jenny Rankin on Carmela Z (Candillo x Caretano) finished on four faults beating France and Spain into second and third place.

Ireland’s success was the result of an outstanding second round, where three of their riders delivered a clear round, overtaking the French team. "It’s obviously a fantastic feeling to jump a clear round in a Nations Cup for your country and your team," Richard Howley – who jumped double clear on Consulent de Prelet Z – said. "I am delighted we were able to get it done tonight. It’s always easier if you have a nice horse, that makes it easier to get a double clear."

The Irish Chef d’Equipe Taylor Vard said: "It was very exciting to be here for the venue’s centenary, winning a Nations Cup is always great."

Jenny Rankin’s faultless second round proved decisive in putting all the pressure on the French rider Olivier Perreau, who riding GL Events Dorai d'Aiguilly (Kannan x Toulon) had two fences down, handing victory to the Irish. The large grass arena at the Sociedade Hípica Portuguesa, one of the most famous international show jumping venues, allowed the nine teams competing to also gain experience jumping on grass in an atmosphere worthy of the greatest events.

The track built by Portuguese course designer Bernardo Costa Cabral was fluid and allowed the horses to keep moving forward, although also having a number of distances that required particular attention such as the line with the double just after the water jump which proved to be influential.

Only four horse-and-rider combinations managed to deliver a double clear for their teams: Richard Howley on Consulent de Prelet Z for Ireland, Belgium’s Gilles Thomas on Calleryama (Casall x Contender), Alex Matz on Cashew CR (Cassini II x Quinar) for the USA and Brazil’s João Victor Castro on Dispo Cece (Tornesch x Quouglof Rouge).

The Lisbon leg was the first of the Region West group in the Longines EEF Series that has its second event next week in Madrid.
