The jumping at the ECCO FEI World Championships kicks off this week in Herning, Denmark, with the Agria FEI Jumping World Championship on the program – and WoSJ has made a guide for our readers to make it as easy as possible to follow the event.

1st team and individual qualifier: Wednesday 10 August 2022 - 10:50 CET

2nd team and individual qualifier: Thursday 11 August 2022 - 12:50 CET

Team final: Friday 12 August 2022 - 20:50 CET

Individual final: Sunday 14 August 2022 - 13:50 CET

1st team and individual qualifier, Wednesday 10 August 2022: 

The first round of the championship is jumped over a big Table A course, set at 1.50m, and judged under Table C. According to the rules, each rider's score in the first round will be "(...) converted into Penalties according to the following method. Each Athlete’s time will be multiplied by the coefficient 0.50 and converted into points; the points must be rounded to two decimal places. The second decimal place will be rounded up from .005 and rounded down from .004. The Athlete with the lowest number of points after this conversion will be given zero Penalties, the other Athletes being credited with the number of Penalties representing the difference in points between each of them and the leading Athlete."

2nd team and individual qualifier, Thursday 11 August 2022: 

The second team and individual qualifier of the championship is jumped over a 1.60m course, judged as a Table A not against the clock and without a jump-off.

Only the horses and riders which have taken part in Wednesday's round may compete on Thursday. 

Team final and 3rd individual qualifier, Friday 12 August 2022: 

The 50 best riders (plus those tied for 50th place) are allowed to participate in the third individual qualification competition, which is also the final round of the team competition – set at 1.60m.

The team final is open to the ten best placed teams and those teams equal on penalties for tenth place after Wednesday and Thursday's rounds. All teams in the final carry their penalties from Wednesday and Thursday's rounds forward. 

According to the rules, teams which participate in Friday's final receive their placing by adding together the penalties from the best three riders on each team in Wednesday's round, and the penalties from the three best riders in each of the rounds on Thursday and Friday. The team with the least number of penalties will become World Champion. In the event of equality of penalties between teams for first, second and/or third place, there will be a jump-off against the clock in which all team riders may take part to decide the medals.

Individual final, Sunday 14 August 2022:

The individual final is conducted over two 1.60m rounds judged under Table A not against the clock. The first round of the individual final is compulsory for the 25 best-placed horses and riders from the previous competitions of the championship. The second round of the individual final is open to the 12 best placed horses and riders.

According to the rules, the individual placing for each rider is determined by adding together the penalties from Wednesday, Thursday and Friday's rounds, as well as the two rounds of Sunday's individual final. The rider with the least penalties will be declared the World Champion. In the event of equality for one of the first three places after all rounds have been jumped, there will be a jump-off against the clock to decide the medals.

The ECCO FEI World Championships 2022 will provide the first qualifying opportunity for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The five highest ranked jumping teams from the Agria FEI Jumping World Championship 2022, excluding the host country team (France), will qualify for Paris.

• The youngest medallist is Marion Janice Coakes (GBR) at 18 years old, and the oldest medallist Laura Kraut (USA) at 53 years old
