Equestrian sports have some incredible photographers, who document the action, emotions and memorable moments at venues world-wide – and also those special relationships between horses and humans outside the ring. We asked some of them to share their favourite photo of 2023 with World of Showjumping, and write a few words about what the photo represents for them. 

Marcus Ehning and Stevie Macken, Aachen Rolex Grand Prix 2023.

This image stood out to me from the moment I captured it. In the brawl of elation around Marcus as he came off Stargold after winning the Grand Prix, it was a split second moment before the next person congratulated him and in this moment you see the raw emotion on his face of sheer joy and accomplishment. The smile of Stevie Macken is testimony to everyone's support of Marcus on his win that day and I feel in a place where so many people can capture the same beautiful moments from many different angles, this image itself was slightly rarer. One I will cherish throughout my career as a photographer on such an unforgettable day.

Remote cameras are one my favorite ways to make images with a special visual precision regarding the available scene – This one at the world-wide thriller CHIO Aachen.

Extra special was the flight-like appearance of Faltic HB and Ben Maher over the Aachen Stadium.

This photo is from Spruce Meadows in September 2023 when Martin Fuchs and Leone Lei won the Rolex Grand Prix. I like this because it radiates an incredible amount of honest joy and energy from both Martin and Leone!

Marcus Ehning, never 2 without 3!

This photo is probably my favorite of this incredible year 2023. That of a great horseman, who for the 3rd time of his career has registered his name on the table of the winners of the prestigious Rolex Grand Prix of Aachen with ease and with the genius that we know him!

My favourite photo of the year is when my nephew Theodor had his first acquaintance with horses. This photo is special to me, since I like the innocence that is so similar between horse and child – both of them depend on people caring for them in the best possible way.
