Holstein’s genetic treasury is opened to reveal precious frozen semen from some of the most formidable stallions. The first Holsteiner frozen semen auction is held online from 29 May to 3 June 2024.

23 straws – nearly all of them with a ICSI permit – will come under the virtual hammer and a look at the stallions - Caretino, Carthago, Cassini I, Corrado I, Cor de la Bryère, Contender, Big Star, For Pleasure, Baloubet du Rouet, Quidam de Revel, and Quick Star, among others - will make many expert hearts beat higher. The name Caretino will certainly make many breeders and riders think of another stud: once-in-a-century stallion Casall, stood by the Holsteiner Verband stallion stable, and at 25 still fit as a fiddle and still very popular with the breeders.

When talking about the Holsteiner Verband stallion stable: This is and has been the base of a string of stallions with quite an impact on international jumping horse breeding, as sport horses and studs. Like for example Carthago, Cassini I and Corrado I – these three icons have more in common than just their grey coat. All of them excelled at international level in competition and sired, quasi en passant, horses of exceptional quality for all successful jumping horse studbooks – an absolute sensation at the time. And then there is French stallion Cor de la Bryère and his grandson Contender, who could fill books in their own right. What would the show jumping world be like today without Cor de la Bryère and his descendants? Precious are also the two straws by Concerto II, the Contender son who died much too early and, despite only a few years at stud, was able to make a name for himself as a sire. Concerto II on the dam’s side is like hitting the jackpot – just think of Derby winner Carassina (Thomas Kleis/GER), who is alone dam to two stallions, United Way and Million’s Way.

The story of each of these 23 precious straws could go on and on. The opportunity to secure this genes, absolute gems then and now, is certainly a rare one you should not miss out on. Online bidding begins on Wednesday, 29 May 2024, at 12:00 noon, with the final bid-up scheduled to begin on Monday, 3 June 2024, at 6:00pm.
