At 5* level, the pressure to perform goes far beyond the course in front of you. In this article, equestrian mental coach, Annette Paterakis, explores how professional riders can move from overthinking, expectation, and riding not to fail, to building the mindset, connection, and inner consistency needed to perform when it matters most. She will be exploring this further at her one-day immersive event, The Power of Connection, in the Netherlands on 30 June 2026.
One of my clients was already competing at a level most riders dream of, yet winning a 5* Grand Prix still felt out of reach.
When she first reached out, she was already a successful professional rider. She was competing at a high level, riding on Nations Cup teams, producing results, and doing many things well. From the outside, it would have been easy to assume she had everything in place.
But in our first conversation, we spoke about what was still holding her back, where pressure was showing up, what was already working, and what she wanted to change. At that point, winning a 5* Grand Prix felt so far away that she did not even mention it as a goal.
When we eventually started working together, first through 1-on-1 coaching and later through my Academy, the work was not about getting her to try harder, want it more, or put more pressure on herself. She was already committed. The work was about helping her turn pressure into presence, so her feel, timing and connection with her horse could lead the round.
And recently, she won her first 5* Grand Prix.
At the highest level of the sport, the difference is often not whether a rider has the ability. It is whether they can stay connected enough to use it when it matters most.
The reason I share this story is that I have spoken to so many riders throughout my career as a mental coach who are in a similar position. They are ambitious, talented, and already successful, yet they know there is another level inside them that they are not consistently accessing.
From the outside, they often look confident. They are producing results, riding good horses, and building strong careers. But underneath, they can feel the gap between the rider they are today and the rider they know they could become.
The athletes I work with have everything they need to succeed; I help them find the missing link to translate their potential into powerful results.

The frustration is that working harder is not always the answer. Many of these riders have already tried doing more: more training, more analysis, more equipment changes, better horses, different trainers, even mental training. But under pressure, the same patterns return. They get in their head. They overthink. They try to control too much. They think their way around the course instead of feeling every stride.
What got them this far - their drive, work ethic, and high standards - can start to work against them when the pressure is highest. Instead of creating more flow, connection, and consistency, they find themselves forcing the ride and still hitting the same roadblocks.
From pressure to performance
This is often when riders reach out to me.
My approach is not about pretending pressure does not exist. It is about changing your relationship with it, and training yourself to stay present when things feel uncomfortable.
At 5* level, every rider knows how to ride, and every horse is capable. The difference between a good round and a winning round is rarely more talent, more pressure, or more trying. More often, it is the ability to stay clear in your own mind when everything is on the line.
Pressure itself is not the problem. In many ways, pressure simply shows you where your attention goes when something matters. This is where awareness becomes powerful. Once you can notice what is happening inside you, you can choose where your attention goes next. From the problem to the solution. From your head back into your body. From thinking into feeling. From planning into being. From questioning whether you’ll do the right thing, to trusting you’ll figure it out in the moment.
And the more connected you are to yourself, the more deeply you can connect with your horse.
After 14 years as an equestrian mental coach, this is one thing I know for sure: you can only connect with your horse at the level you are prepared to connect with yourself.
That is the part that helped my client win her first 5* Grand Prix. The pressure was still there, but she had trained herself to notice it in the moment. In the warm-up, she felt her mind go to the outcome, and her body became slightly more tense. Instead of judging it or fighting it, she observed it, redirected herself, and came back to what mattered most: herself and her horse.
She had trained for that moment. And that is the work.
My client’s story is not an isolated example. It reflects what I have seen again and again in talented riders who stop letting pressure dictate their performance and start riding from a stronger internal foundation.
- 5* Rider in TEMA:
Went from #96 in the world ranking to #55 in 4 months; increased clear rate at 1.60m from 30% to 40%
- 5* Rider Over 24 Months working 1-2-1:
Went from #280 in the world to #50 in the world; increased classes won by 37%; increased annual prize money by 174K EUR
- 100% of clients who entered, successfully qualified for the $1M Rolex GP in Wellington (3 of 3), with 1 finishing in the top 10
- Overall, after 12 months of working together - clients average an increase in annual prize money of 162K EUR, moved up 158 places in the world rankings, and won 42% more classes
- Beyond results riders say the most powerful change is their ability to stay present and deeply connected under pressure - creating greater consistency, confidence, and trust with their horses.
These numbers matter because they show what this work is really about. It is not only about helping riders feel calmer or more confident; it is about helping them perform at their best when the pressure is highest. By strengthening their mental foundation and working at a deeper level of identity, riders are able to translate their training, talent, and preparation into results. So when it matters most, they can stay connected, ride from trust, and allow their best performance to show up in the ring - often with a smile on their face!
That is the work behind the result! And it is the focus of my upcoming Power of Connection event in the Netherlands.
Join me on June 30th for one full immersive day to explore and deepen the concept that you can only connect with your horse at the level you are prepared to connect with yourself.
