In Friday's CSI5* 1.55m main class at the Waregem Horse Week, the best thirteen combinations returned for the second round after the BWFA Auction. Twelve completed the first round faultless.
The first rider at the start was Italy's Alberto Zorzi aboard Danique (Zento x Hamlet), that had one rail down with his KWPN-mare. Belgium's Christophe Vanderhasselt was the first to complete the second round faultless in the saddle of his Belgian Warmblood mare, Identity Vitseroel (Air Jordan Z x Darco). Vanderhasselt stopped the clock in 56.28 seconds setting the pace.
Great Britain's Scott Brash immediately did it faster with his 9-year-old Stolzenberg-son Hello Shelby, crossing the finish line in 54.99 seconds. Brash's lead did not last though, as USA's Jessica Springsteen and Rmf Swinny du Parc (Caspar x Laudanum) brought the time down to 53.82 seconds.
It seemed like Springsteen was heading for the victory but eventually Belgium's Gregory Wathelet impressed, being over two seconds faster. Wathelet made a short turn towards the Waregem Horse Week vertical and saved a second after the double combination with Mjt Nevados (Calvados Z x Romualdo). Crossing the finish line in 51.79 seconds the pair snatched the win, with USA's Kent Farrington and Creedance (Lord Z x Notaris) pushing into runner-up position leaving Springsteen to third.
