As the last pair out, Mexico's own Andres Azcarraga and the 17-year-old stallion Contendros 2 (Contendro I x Drosselklang II) took a popular home win in Sunday's CSI5* 1.60m GNP Grand Prix at Club Hipico La Silla in Monterrey.
With the courses set by a team of course designers – Gregory Bodo (FRA) and Marco Behrens (GER) – 38 horse-and-rider combinations lined up for the competition counting for the Longines Rankings Group AA, and the twelve best from the first round continued on to the deciding second round.
Only the top five managed to deliever a double clear, with the host nation's own Andres Azcarraga and Contendros 2 snatching the win from Emanuele Camilli (ITA) and Odense Odeveld (Diamant de Semilly x Querlybet Hero) who were leading the way with a time of 40.88 seconds when the Mexican rider entered the ring to conclude the competition. Much to the delight of the enthuasiastic Mexican crowds, Andres Azcarraga crossed the finish line in 40.20 seconds, pushing Camilli down to second.
Harry Charles (GBR) and Casquo Blue (Chacco-Blue x) Carthago) completed the podium in third after clocking a time of 41.04 seconds, while Christian Ahlmann (GER) on Dourkhan Hero Z (Sea Coast Don't Touch Tiji Hero x Zandor Z) finished fourth in 41.34 and Shane Sweetnam (IRL) aboard RR Combella (Cornet du Lys x Indoctro) fifth in 42.83.
