After opening the weekend at the 2022-edition of Jumping Indoor Maastricht with a win in Friday's 1.50m VDL Groep Prize, Maikel van der Vleuten and the 10-year-old mare Elwikke (Eldorado v. Zeshoek x Quick Star) continued their great form on Sunday and took the top honours in the 1.55m Grand Prix of Maastricht.
Fourteen pairs out of the 38 horse-and-rider-combinations at start cleared the first-round track set by the Dutch course designer Quintin Maertens. With a time of 42.10 in the jump-off, Van der Vleuten and Elwikke took the win ahead of Germany's Hans-Dieter Dreher and Cous Cous 3 (Cachas x Lasino) – with 1.6 seconds separating the two riders.
“Elwikke is a real fighter with an incredible amount of quality," Van der Vleuten said about his horse after their win. “It was a great week for me after a few weeks with not so many top results. Elwikke gives me a lot of confidence to be able to take all risks in the jump-off.”
Belgium's Olivier Philippaerts and H&M Miro (Diamant de Semilly x Kannan) placed third, while the fourth spot went to France's Cedric Hurel and Fantasio Floreval Z (Florian de La Vie x Clinton) and fifth to USA's Laura Kraut and Baloutinue (Balou du Rouet x Landor S).
