Irish rider Richard Howley has had a great week at the Sunshine Tour, and today he won the CSI3* Grand Prix presented by Avant/Toro aboard the 10-year-old gelding Calmond (Clarimo x Ramiro's S.II).
The Grand Prix 1.55m track was designed by international acclaimed course designer Uliano Vezzani, and eventually eleven riders went clear to move on to the jump-off.
Against the clock, Howley was the only rider to complete the jump-off in under 40 seconds – in a time of 39.22. Dutch rider Eric Van der Vleuten rode Zigali PS (Kigali x Palfrenier) to runner-up position with a time of 40.60 seconds beating Spanish rider Eduardo Alvarez Aznar on Fidux (Malito de Reve x Voltaire) who took third with a time of 40.91 seconds. The Spanish came strong in force, with Iván Serrano ending fourth and Gonzalo Añón fifth.
