France's Kevin Staut and the 11-year-old gelding Beau de Laubry Z (Bisquet Balou C x Nabab de Reve) won Friday's CSIO5* 1.60m Tourmaline Oil Cup at the Spruce Meadows 'Masters' in Calgary, Canada, as the only double clear pair in the class.
Two pairs – Staut on Beau de Laubry Z and Ireland's Cian O'Connor on Fermoy (Chacco's Son x Light On) – out of the 33 horse-and-rider combinations at start cleared Leopoldo Palacio's first-round track and joined the deciding jump-off, where only Staut delivered another clear. Stopping the clock on 44.51, Staut and Beau de Laubry Z took the win ahead of O'Connor and Fermoy, who had to settle for second with two poles down with a time of 46.51.
Five pairs were kept out of the jump-off due to time penalties in round one: Harrie Smolders (NED) and Uricas vd Kattevennen (Uriko x Cassini) placed third with a single penalty in 78.45, while times of 78.50 and 78.56 left Lillie Keenan (USA) on Argan de Beliard (Mylord Carthago x Ahorn) to fourth and Daniel Deusser (GER) aboard Killer Queen VDM (Eldorado vd Zeshoek x For Pleasure) to fifth respectively.
