Penelope Leprevost on her horse Flora de Mariposa: “It’s right that I only had three shows with her before the Europeans,” the French rider replied when asked about the mare that was out of action earlier this summer. “I had a good round, but I was too long to the triple bar into the first combination but she was amazing and jumped very well.”

Leprevost on the next days: “I will try to do my best!"

Ludger Beerbaum on the competition and the course: "Yes, I think we had a fair course. We had faults everywhere, even number one came down a few times. I think it was a Table C with a Table A character to me. The track for sure suited natural fast horses. Penelope's horse is a natural easy fast horse and so is actually mine, so I was very pleased with the course. It suited my type of horse. Knowing that we only have done one third for the team here, it`s still two big rounds left, so nobody went completely flat out. I'm happy with my performances and also my team's. We all did four very good rounds, and we can be very pleased with today’s performances.

Joe Clee on how Utamaro d’Ecaussines reacted on his first time in Aachen, and whether the horse was surprised: “Well, I had a surprise - sitting here,” the British rider laughed. "It was fantastic, and it’s an amazing show here and it’s a beautiful arena. Going into the ring I obviously felt the pressure, I knew I had to ride a good round. But my horse is great under pressure, and jumps only better. After fence four he felt good and relaxed, and I knew I could take a bit more risk and he answered all questions asked.”

On the target for the British team, Clee said: “Qualification for Rio is the main goal for the team, and that of course goes hand in hand with a good result here."

Course designer Frank Rothenberger said: “It's always difficult with the first class, which can't be bigger than 1.50 according to the schedule (…) We had about 29 clear rounds, and I hoped for 30, so I'm very pleased. With the dressage ring in the middle of the arena we try to avoid tiny and short turns, so that the ground will survive the 100 horses in there. In the end I think we had a good class."
