Belgium's own Gregory Wathelet took a popular home win in Sunday's CSI4* 1.60m Grand Prix of Liege. As last to go in the jump-off, Wathelet snatched the win from his compatriot Dominique Hendrickx when being nearly two seconds faster.

It was a full house in Liege for this 1.60m Grand Prix, and with two home riders in the jump-off the hopes were high for the hosts. Only six riders out of 43 managed to produce clear rounds over the challenging first-round track set by Frank Van Humbeeck, setting up for an exciting jump-off.

The first in the ring for the jump-off was Colombia's Dayro Arroyave who had an unfortunate rail on the first oxer, followed by Switzerland's Bryan Balsiger who also recorded four faults. Germany's Katharina Offel had to see a pole on the last fence fall to the ground, while Brazil's Pedro Junqueira Muylaert managed to keep it all intact as fourth to go opting for a steady clear on Prince Royal Z Mfs (Prince de Revel x Ramiro Z).

The Brazilian rider was quickly overtaken though as Dominique Hendrickx and Koriano Van Klapscheut (Lord Z x Darco) took over the lead as next to go with a time of 35.56 seconds, to wild cheers from the home crowds. Entering the ring as last to go, Wathelet wanted it different however bringing home the win in 33.79 seconds on Mjt Nevados S (Calvados Z x Romualdo) to make it double Belgian on top in Liege.

After a successful weekend in Liege, Wathelet was also awarded as Leading Rider of the show.
