Marlen Schannwell: “Hang around with your horses instead of humans"

Friday, 20 March 2020
On the way home...

While most of us are in isolation at home, Bertram Allen’s show groom Marlen Schannwell is stuck in Wellington, Florida waiting to go back with their horses to Germany.

“Hello from the other side,

Whilst everyone has been stressing to get home from Spain, we are here in Wellington and no one knows what is actually going on here in the US. They love their fake news, so we are actually just waiting for the big shutdown as Florida is a big holiday destination with thousands of people going in and out every day.

Wednesday last week a passenger was tested positive flying into West Palm Beach, but they let all the other passengers leave without check-up so panic broke out. By Friday the supermarket was out of toilet paper… Seeing that we are in America, only the unhealthy food was gone but no problem with fruit juices and fish. For now, malls and restaurants are still open but our gym closed on Tuesday so now everyone is out running or cycling.

Every few minutes we’re hearing different rumours about lockdowns, borders and airports closing and only essential travels being allowed. So probably horses aren’t really essential… Seeing that we didn’t come here with our truck we need to find a flight that brings us back home without any problems, and we don’t really want to have the horses stuck at an airport – then we better stay here.

The first few horses left to Amsterdam on Wednesday. We got a flight on Sunday, so we should hopefully be home in Germany on Monday – enjoying the home groom life. Probably going to power hose every cm at the yard... As Bertram’s brother Harry also just came back from Oliva, the stable is in quarantine so I guess I need to smuggle a few margarita mixers home to keep everyone going.

We anyway have plenty of horses at home, so we won’t get bored. I think for the horses it’s not the worse to slow down the crazy show life. Was about to be a very busy year, but that came to an abrupt end.

Please stay at home / yard, and stay safe and healthy.

Hang around with your horses instead of humans. We equestrians are normally pros in social distancing so it should be easier for us!

Marlen"
