Chianto (Carano x Primus AA) – long-time partner of Canada’s John Pearce – passed away peacefully on Monday at the age of 25. With Pearce in the saddle, Chianto represented Canada at the World Equestrian Games in Kentucky in 2010 where the pair finished 5th with the team and 8th individually.

Bred by Annete Marschall Nielsen in Denmark, Chianto was born in 1996. “I was privileged to become a part of Chianto’s incredible journey in April of 2003, just as he was turning seven,” his owner Alison Moore told World of Showjumping. “Over the next five years, he and I made our way through the divisions to the Grand Prix ring together with many victories and amazing memories across the globe. An injury early in 2007 prior to the Pan-American Game selection trials took me out of the saddle, but Jonathan Millar was able to step aboard and continue placing in the Grand Prix ring that summer.”

“It was then that I made the hardest decision of my life to step away from my own dreams of representing Canada and allowing Chianto the opportunity to go on without me – pairing him with John Pearce. The rest as they say is history. When this pair clicked, there was no stopping them!! With 30 Grand Prix victories, placing in the Top 10 in over 100 classes and a lifetime earnings at over $1.1 Million – not to mention a team 5th and individual 8th place at the World Equestrian Games in Kentucky where Chianto proudly bore out my dreams of representing Canada!”

At the age of 19, Chianto retired from competition with a victory in the Santa Fee Grand Prix in September 2015. “He remained with John at his home in California, enjoying hacking through the hills and keeping the young horses company until his peaceful passing Monday night,” Moore said.
