Sweden’s Jonna Ekberg, who works for Stephex Stables in Belgium, was one of many riders at the Sunshine Tour in Vejer de la Frontera, Spain who this weekend received the news that not only would the remains of the event be forced into cancellation due to the Coronavirus Covid-19 outbreak – the country would go in lockdown from Monday morning at 8 AM. World of Showjumping had a talk with Ekberg, only a few hours after her horses and team arrived safely back in Belgium.

“We got back at 4.30 Monday morning. Everything went really well, and it was hardly any traffic at all. The travel has probably never been so easy. And it seems like no one actually had problems returning home so far. It was a lot of rumors going on before we left about how difficult it would be to cross the borders, but so far everything has gone well,” Ekberg explains.

“Everyone has been very helpful – with everything from finding overnight stables and reporting about the border crossings. The Facebook group ‘Horse Transport Europe during Corona Virus’ has also been of great help the last couple of days.”

“I guess we will continue to ride as normal here at home, I haven’t heard anything else so far. But we have all been spread out in different countries and everyone are just arriving back or are on their way back, so we will see over the next couple of days. At this time, you really don’t know what will happen – it is just to accept and take one day at the time,” Ekberg concludes.
