It was a convincing victory for Belgium's Gudrun Patteet in Saturday's 1.60m Longines Grand Prix at CSI5*-W A Coruña. Aboard the 12-year-old gelding Sea Coast Pebbles Z (Picasso x Flamenco de Semilly), Patteet took all the risk in the jump-off leaving her competitors with no choice but to do the same.
Twelve out of the 38 pairs in the class managed to produce clears over the first-round 1.60m track to move on to the jump-off. Among them, three Spanish riders: Gerardo Menéndez Mieres, Julio Arias and Eduardo Álvarez Aznar.
Belgium's Dominique Hendrickx took an early lead on Kannabis van de Bucxtale (Contact van de Heffinck x Concorde), after stopping the clock at 43.07 seconds. It was not until Patteet's round, as the fourth participant, that there was another clear round – and she saved the time down to an incredible 40.65. Menendez Mieres, coming in immediately afterwards, battled it out with a good performance but not fast enough to defeat the winning time – eventually ending third after stopping the clock at 43.22 seconds.
"It is an incredible victory, but also because I have an amazing horse," said Patteet. "There were great riders in the jump-off, such as Olivier Robert who won yesterday, so I went pretty fast. I don't have the impression of having been risky, but when I try with this horse he really is faster than others."
