Very sadly, Stephex Stables has today announced that Daniel Deusser’s Olympic team bronze medallist First Class van Eeckelghem has passed away due to colic.

“There are no words to describe what feelings go through my mind and heart, today I say goodbye to a friend,” reads a statement from Daniel Deusser. “From the first day I sat on you, I knew we were destined to achieve greatness although our beginnings were a bit shaky and okay admit now, First Class you were not the easiest but nevertheless your heart was great and your fighting spirit amazed me. From our first Grand Prix win to our title as German Champions and that Olympic medal wrapped around my neck it's by any doubt YOU I owe it to. You were a once in a lifetime horse that I will always carry in my heart, RIP my friend.”

“I did not ride you but I know what joy you brought to Daniel, me and our team,” states Stephan Conter. “About me as a horseman and owner you have made most of my dreams come true in the sport. I know now what has been lost and will hardly be replaced. THANK YOU First Class and rest in peace!”

Together, First Class van Eeckelghem and Daniel Deusser won team bronze at last year’s Olympic Games in Rio. The pair also recorded top-three finishes in the CSI5* Grand Prix of Doha (twice in 2016), the CSI5* Grand Prix of Treffen (2016 and 2015) and the CSI5* Grand Prix of Chantilly (2016) – to mention some. First Class van Eeckelghem was also on the winning team in the 2016 Nations Cup Final in Barcelona.

Our thoughts go out to the entire team at Stephex Stables.
