Artemis Equestrian Farms has today announced the retirement of the now 15-year-old gelding Carlito's Way, Rodrigo Pessoa's partner from the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. Rodrigo Pessoa took over the reins on Carlito's Way back in 2020, who then had been competed successfully by Markus Beerbaum and Rene Dittmer. With Pessoa in the saddle, Carlito's Way went on to jump five-star Grand Prix classes and Nations Cups before becoming the Brazilian rider's choice for the Tokyo Olympics. In 2022, Rodrigo's wife Alexa began competing the gelding and the two had many good results together all the way up to four-star level.
On their Instagram account, Artemis Equestrian Farms wrote:
"Forever grateful to Carlito’s Way as he heads into a well-earned retirement.
Carlito has been one of the greatest gifts to our team. After @artemisfarms1 purchased him as a 7-year-old, @rodrigopessoa29 developed & piloted him to the pinnacle of the sport — 5* competition, Nations Cups, & the Tokyo Olympics. He then gave @alexawpessoa the chance to return to the 3* level to leave us with even more unforgettable moments.
We owe so much to this incredible horse & to Artemis Farms for trusting us with him. Thank you, Carlito, for your heart and partnership."
At World of Showjumping, we wish Carlito’s Way a happy retirement.
