The International Jumping Riders Club reports that Santiago Varela will be the course designer for the jumping at the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2020.

Varela was introduced to horses at a very young age, and he started his career as course designer at the Club de Campo de Madrid in 1984. His course designing career progressed, and in 2013 he reached FEI Level 4. In 2013, Varela was appointed as course designer for the first FEI Nations Cup Final in Barcelona and for the FEI European Championships for Young Riders, Juniors, and Children in Vejer de la Frontera, Spain. In 2011 he was responsible for the course design at the FEI European Championships in Madrid. At the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro he was working as a technical delegate.
