The 17-year-old mare Ornellaia (For Pleasure x Calato) – bred by Harm Thormaehlen – has been retired from the sport.

Owned by Team Harmony, the mare has been successful on the highest level of the sport with multiple riders: Francois Mathy Jr. (BEL), John Whitaker (GBR), Peter Moloney (IRL), Anna-Julia Kontio (FIN) and most recently with Sienna Charles (GBR). During her long career, Ornellaia recorded many top results, picking up wins at venues such as Hagen, Monte Carlo, Lexington, London, Paris, Rouen, Toronto and Vejer de la Frontera. With Great Britain’s John Whitaker in the saddle, Ornellaia jumped at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and that same year she was also part of the winning British team in the CSIO5* Nations Cup in Rome, Italy. In one of her last appearances with Sienna Charles, Ornellaia jumped double clear in the CSIO3* Nations Cup in Madrid, Spain.

On her official Instagram account, Sienna Charles paid tribute to Ornellaia: “Happy retirement Ornellaia! So grateful for the opportunity to have had you as my partner over the last 3 years, one of a kind.”

At World of Showjumping, we wish Ornellaia a happy retirement!
