Italy's Lorenzo de Luca and the 15-year-old gelding Violino Il Palazetto (Verdi TN x Jasper) won Friday's CSI4* 1.50m A&M Sporthorses Prize at Sentower Park in Opglabbeek, Belgium, besting a field of 83 starters in a class counting for the Longines Ranking Group D that also served as a qualifier for Sunday's Grand Prix.
With a time of 35.90 seconds in a jump-off between nine horse-and-rider combinations, de Luca took the win ahead of Ireland's Michael Duffy and Dublin (Cascadello x Balou du Rouet) in second in 37.03, while France's Jean Charles Grandmontagne and Generation Ixe (Cornet Obolensky x Diamant de Semilly) placed third in 39.88.
With a fence down in 37.88, Belgium's Gilles Thomas and Elfra Van Beek Z (El Salvador x Vagabond de La Pomme) had to settle for fourth, while France's Simon Delestre and Dexter Fontenis Z (Diarado x Voltaire Pref) finished fifth with four faults in a time of 38.25.
