The Longines FEI European Championships for Juniors presented by Le Haras du Val Henry wrapped up on Friday in Fontainebleau, France with a victory for the Belgian team, who claimed gold ahead of Great Britain and Ireland.

There was a fantastic atmosphere in the stands of the Grand Parquet equestrian stadium as the crowd congratulated the 100% male team from Belgium! Thanks to clear rounds from Thibault Philippaerts and Alexander Housen, the nation finished the team championship with a total of 14.55 points. Simon Morssinkhof, the last rider of the squad to enter on course under the watchful eyes of numerous Belgian fans, had to do better than the twelve faults conceded by his compatriot Thibault Spits, and a small penalty only increased the supporters’ tension and that of the young rider. But as he and his mount crossed the finish line, the Belgians on-site erupted in joy as they knew they were assured of a medal!

The last rider to take to the course at the Grand Parquet today, Great Britain’s Jack Whitaker, also had the difficult task of improving the eleven faults racked up by his teammate Robert Murphy. Mission accomplished, however, as he bettered that, although four unfortunate faults were added to the team total after a small mistake at the end of the course. Great Britain ended up with 22.29 points cumulatively, which allowed them to climb the second step of the podium and take the silver, just ahead of their Irish neighbours in third with 25.17 points.
