Edited press release from Hubside Jumping

Stories with lots of unexpected developments have been frequent at the Hubside Jumping this season. After the double victories of the Netherlands’ Maikel van der Vleuten and Belgium’s Niels Bruynseels, it was the turn of Great Britain's Scott Brash to win a second CSI4* Grand Prix in 2020 in Grimaud, France. However, the British rider already had a head start on his rivals in terms of victories: He also won a CSI2* Grand Prix this year as well as a CSI4* Grand Prix last year!

Before the competition started, the commentator had already informed the spectators onsite that the Hubside Jumping’s 4* Grand Prix was very similar to a 5* Grand Prix. Indeed Andrea Colombo, the Italian course designer, had done his homework about the line-up of entrants and the quality of those competing before building his course: Eight of the forty-six riders qualified found the key to the first round - perfect!

Simon Delestre, one of the two French riders qualified for this second round against the clock, was first to go in the jump-off, with his fast and experienced Chesall Zimequest (Casall x Concerto II). The combination from Lorraine jumped double clear, at a good pace in 40.82 seconds. However, Emmanuel Gaudiano and his unique Chalou (Chacco-Blue x Baloubet du Rouet) were also double clear and faster than the French rider in 40.53 seconds. Belgium’s Pieter Devos, who was third to go on Jade vd Bisscop (Ogano Sitte x Grannus) didn’t have any poles down but wasn’t as quick with his 41.15 seconds. Germany’s Daniel Deusser, the world number three, was less lucky than the previous riders and had four faults, with Casallvano (Casall x Gestion Silvano N). Scott Brash, the fifth rider to go in this jump-off with Hello Jefferson (Cooper Vd Heffinck x Irco Mena) – perhaps the most exciting one that the Hubside Jumping had offered its spectators this year – relegated the provisional leader Gaudiano to the second place: The world number ten jumped clear and was forty hundredths of a second faster.

Julien Epaillard, renowned for being one of the fastest riders in the world, Belgium’s Niels Bruynseels, whose name will unquestionably be linked to this second season of the Hubside Jumping after his two Grand Prix victories, and the world number two and the current European individual gold medallist, Switzerland’s Martin Fuchs, were the riders left to go. The first two, riding Alibi de la Roque (Mylord Carthago*HN x Kannan*Gfe) and Delux Van T&L (Toulon x Landetto) respectively, both had a pole down while Fuchs and Sliver Shine (Califax x Balou du Rouet) had two poles down.

This meant that the British national anthem was played in honour of Scott Brash’s victory in a Grand Prix for the third time this season, on this final day of this tenth week of competition at the Hubside Jumping.

“It was a fantastic Grand Prix," Scott Brash said. "To have a first round with forty-six riders and finish with eight riders in the jump-off was a perfect scenario: The course designer Andrea Colombo did a fabulous job, despite the line-up which must have made his life difficult. The track and the level of this Grand Prix were exceptional, but of course it is easy for me to say that, as I was one of the eight jump-off riders! The jump-off was really exciting, with a long gallop until the last fence, where I think I managed to save time. My horse Hello Jefferson is very fast on the ground and very fast when he jumps a series of fences. He is so careful that I had unquestioning faith in him when he gave it all in the last line, to determine the distance that he needed: I really trust his ability to judge distance by sight. I will be back next week for the Hubside Jumping’s final show of the season. I have already won two 4* Grands Prix and a 2* Grand Prix in two years of competition here in Grimaud. You can count on me to give it my all next weekend. The best horses and riders will naturally be present and as usual it won’t be easy, but I will try to have a fourth victory!”
