This past weekend, Jérôme Guery announced the retirement of his multi-medallist Quel Homme de Hus (Quidam de Revel x Candillo – bred by Dr. Andreas Kosicki) – at the age of 18.
The two-time Olympic stallion won team bronze with the Belgian squad in Tokyo in 2021, jumped to individual silver at the 2022 World Championships in Herning and contributed to the Belgian team gold at the 2019 European Championships in Rotterdam. In August, he did his last championship apperance at the Olympic Games in Paris. In 2022, Quel Homme de Hus and Guery were part of the Belgian team that won the CSIO5* Longines FEI Nations Cup Jumping™ Final in Barcelona, and the pair helped Belgium to other big Nations Cup victories too – in La Baule in 2022, and in Rome in 2021. They also won the CSI5* Rolex Grand Prix of Knokke in 2021 as well as the CSI5* Longines Global Champions Tour Grand Prix of Mexico City in 2019, to mention some of their biggest victories together.
However, Quel Homme de Hus’ journey to the top centres around something more important than his qualities: It’s a story about deep friendships, and his return to the international scene in February 2024 after a serious injury at the end of 2022 was a show of great resilience as Guery and the stallion went on to jump at the Paris Olympic Games this summer.
With these images – starting with Guery and Quel Homme de Hus' last international appearance together at Spruce Meadows in September – we take a look back at some of the many memorable moments from Quel Homme's incredible career as we wish him the happiest of retirements!
