Jérôme Guery's multi-medallist Quel Homme de Hus (Quidam de Revel x Candillo – bred by Dr. Andreas Kosicki) will be retired from the sport at the age of 18, Guery announced on Sunday.
The two-time Olympic stallion won team bronze with the Belgian squad in Tokyo in 2021, jumped to individual silver at the 2022 World Championships in Herning and contributed to the Belgian team gold at the 2019 European Championships in Rotterdam. In 2022, Quel Homme de Hus and Guery were part of the Belgian team that won the CSIO5* Longines FEI Nations Cup Jumping™ Final in Barcelona, and the pair helped Belgium to other big Nations Cup victories too – in La Baule in 2022, and in Rome in 2021. They also won the CSI5* Rolex Grand Prix of Knokke in 2021 as well as the CSI5* Longines Global Champions Tour Grand Prix of Mexico City in 2019, to mention some of their biggest victories together.
However, Quel Homme de Hus’ journey to the top centres around something more important than his qualities: It’s a story about deep friendships, and his return to the international scene in February 2024 after a serious injury at the end of 2022 was a show of great resilience as Guery and the stallion went on to jump at the Paris Olympic Games this summer.
Guery announced the retirement of his special equine partner on social media, writing:
"Dear friends, partners and enthusiasts of equestrian sports,
The Paris Olympics represented our last major goal. Thanks to an incredible team and extraordinary people, we were able to fulfil this dream: To take our champion Quel Homme de Hus to the Olympics after his injury. This challenge resembles everything he is: An exceptional horse.
At 18 years old, our dear QH is in great physical shape, and we wish to keep him that way for a long time. That is why, with great emotion, we announce today the athletic retirement of our great companion, Quel Homme de Hus. After years of success on the most beautiful arenas in the world, after winning gold at the European Championships, silver at the World Championships and bronze at the Olympic Games, as well as many other unforgettable moments, it's time for him to enjoy a well-deserved retirement.
Thank you, thank you Quel Homme, for everything you have given us and for being an extraordinary partner. Thank you life for putting you on our path and allowing us to experience these magical moments by your side. Thanks to all of you who supported and accompanied us throughout his incredible career. Your energy, encouragement and passion have made this journey even more beautiful.
From now on, a new page is being written for you, QH: That of a peaceful retreat, where you can devote yourself to passing on your grace, your strength and all your talent to your future descendants. Enjoy yourself, you deserve it so much... Thank you, QH."
At World of Showjumping, we wish Quel Homme de Hus the happiest of retirements!
