Press release from Rolex Series Equestrian, edited by World of Showjumping
The final places for Sunday's Rolex Grand Prix presented by Agria in Falsterbo, Sweden, were on the line in the last qualifying competition of the week at the Falsterbo Horse Show, with 46 horse-and-rider combinations at start in the CSIO5* 1.50m class, contested under Table A against the clock.
Sweden's Amanda Landeblad was the first rider to enter the arena aboard Hadriana du Ter (Eldorado vd Zeshoek x Dollar du Murier), and the home rider immediately made her intentions clear. Determined to secure her place in Sunday's Grand Prix, she attacked the course from the opening fence and produced a faultless round in 69.73 seconds, setting the benchmark.
Landeblad's time remained untouched until the experience of Argentina's José María Larocca Jr. finally changed the leaderboard. Riding Chris (Contendro I x Argentinus), he delivered a fast clear round in 68.89 seconds to move into the provisional lead.
Youth then had its say. Switzerland's Gaëtan Joliat and Scarlina de Tiji Z (Hunters Scendro x Kannan) raised the pace significantly, stopping the clock in 66.14 seconds, more than two seconds faster.
In front of an enthusiastic home crowd, Sweden's Marcus Westergren was determined to put his country back on top. Setting the pace from the very first fence, Westergren and Airco de L Esprit Z (Air Jordan Alpha Z x Quantum) delivered a superb clear round in 65.80 seconds. The grandstands erupted as the Swedish pair moved into the provisional lead at the halfway stage of the competition.
Their lead would not last for long, though. Representing the United States, Charlotte Jacobs entered the arena aboard Korbach van de Renger (Colestus x Concorde) and produced a blistering round. Clear in 64.14 seconds, the American combination immediately took control of the class.
Then came one of the most remarkable moments of the competition. Ireland's Shane Sweetnam and Pia Maria H (Kasanova de La Pomme x Tangelo van de Zuuthoeve) matched Jacobs' performance exactly, crossing the finish line in the very same time of 64.14 seconds to share the position on the leaderboard.
Belgium's Abdel Saïd and Wathnan Max (Grandorado TN x Andiamo) also joined the battle at the top with a clear round in 65.54 seconds, confirming the extremely tight margins separating the leading combinations.
However, it was Germany's Philipp Weishaupt who ultimately produced the performance of the day. Partnered with Callao L (Congress 4 x Asca Z), he found another gear around Frank Rothenberger's course, combining precision and speed to stop the clock in an unbeatable 62.98 seconds.
Weishaupt's outstanding round secured victory in the final qualifier and brought the qualification battle for Sunday's Rolex Grand Prix presented by Agria to a close.
