Ireland’s Cian O’Connor and the 10-year-old gelding Genghis Khan (Kannan x Diamant de Semilly) won Thursday’s CSI5* 1.55m Championat of Hamburg at the traditional Al Shira’aa German Jumping and Dressage Derby in Klein Flottbek in Hamburg, Germany.
With a time of 45.20 seconds in the second round, O’Connor took the top honours ahead of Edouard Schmitz (SUI) and Gamin van’t Naastveldhof (Chacco Chacco x Toulon), who had to settle for the runner-up spot in 45.47, followed by Arne van Heel (NED) aboard Keaton HV (Kannan x Contendro I) in third in 46.65.
The host nation’s Mario Stevens and Starissa FRH (Stakkato Gold x Quidam’s Rubin) finished fourth with a double clear in 46.66, while William Whitaker (GBR) aboard Millfield Quickstep (Quiwi Dream x Cassini) completed the top five in 46.79.
The second five-star competition of the day, the CSI5* 1.50m presented by Hooved went to Philipp Weishaupt (GER) and the 9-year-old gelding Callao L (Congress x Asca Z). Stopping the clock on 68.86 in the class judged as a Table A against the clock, Weishaupt won on homesoil ahead of his compatriot Nicola Pohl and Fee du Val Guerard (Cornet Obolensky x Ryon d’Anzex) in second in 70.92 and Belgium’s Koen Vereecke aboard Merryweather vt Leeuwerikenhof (Emerald x Tenor Manciais) in third in 72.14.
Belgium’s Mike van Olst and the 11-year-old mare Comme Elle Faut Odth Z (Comme Il Faut x Canabis) topped Thursday’s CSI4* 1.45m Prize of Schafhof Equipts, the first qualfiier for the four-star Grand Prix. Jumping clear in 69.36 seconds, Van Olst bested a field of 37 horse-and-rider combinations, taking the win ahead of Andres Vereecke (BEL) and Vanguard Z (Vannan x Baloubet du Rouet) in second in 71.51 and Clara Blau (GER) aboard Calido’s Blue (Chacoon Blue x Calido I) in third in 71.72.
