The Spanish national anthem could be heard across Montenmedio today as home hero Mariano Martínez Bastida (ESP) and the 13-year-old Belano vd Wijnhoeve Z (Berlin x Darco) took the top honours in the CSI4* 1.50m Andalucía Medium Tour Grand Prix at the Sunshine Tour in Vejer de la Frontera, Spain.
Just when everyone thought that Holly Smith (GBR) had secured the win with Fruselli (Zambesi TN x Karandasj) after stopping the clock in a lightning-fast time of 36.99 seconds, Martínez Bastida flew across the shortened course as second last to go in the jump-off, to cross the finish line in an incredible 36.76 seconds with the crowd going wild.
Third place went to Jens Baackmann (GER) and Aglaia J (Arpeggio x Lancino de L) with a time of 37.61 seconds, while yesterday’s winner of the Big Tour Grand Prix, Penelope Leprevost (FRA) this time riding GFE Candy de Nantuel (Luidam x Diamant de Semilly) finished fourth and Kendra Claricia Brinkop (GER) fifth with Narcos vd Smidshoeve (Toulon x Thunder van de Zuuthoeve).
The winners received their trophies from the vice-president of the Government of Andalusia, Juan Marín.
