Bertam Allen (IRL) and Molly Malone V (Kannan x Cavalier) won Friday evening’s 1.50m class with a jump-off at CSI5* Hamburg.

45 riders lined up for the class and nine cleared the course, while another four riders where clear on the fences but was caught by the time allowed. It was a tricky first round with 12 fences and 15 jumps, and it was mostly the combinations that caused problems for the riders. The a-element of the triple combination at no. 5 and the b-element at the combination at no. 8 fell over and over again.

Marcus Ehning (GER) with Gin Chin van het Lindenhof (Chin Chin x Calido I) decided not to start in the jump-off, so then it was only eight left. Harrie Smolders (NED) with Zinius (Nabab de Reve x Kannan) was first to go and they got a really good start, but a misunderstanding at the second last fence – a new obstacle for the jump-off – lead to a refusal and an 8th place in the end for Smolders.

Olivier Philippaerts (BEL) did a really nice round with Ikker (Ogano Sitte x Up to Date) that was much faster than it looked. Philippaerts stopped the clock at 40,29 seconds. Jack Towell (USA) did his best to catch the time riding the 11-year-old gelding New York (Verdi x Watzmann), but went in on second place with 40,70 seconds.

Then it was time for Bertram Allen, who let Molly Malone V stretch out on the free spaces and with 39,95 seconds he took over the lead.

Laura Kraut (USA) was aboard her new ride Hello Guv’Nor (Diamant de Semilly x Papillon Rouge Normandie), and even though she gave her very best this horse takes quite some time in the air over each fence, leading to a time of 41,47 seconds and a 4th place.

The young and talented Laura Klapphake (GER) was next out with the beautiful Catch Me If You Can (Catoki x Acordplus) and she wasn’t hunting the first place, but delivered a great round ending 5th.

Anna Kellnerova (CZE) had a unfortunate start to her first round when a member of the crew walked through the second fence as she was on her way to jump. Kellnerova made a circle and continued clear around the course. Luckily the judges stopped the clock, and didn’t give her any faults for the circle so she was next out in the jump-off. Riding Calcourt Falklund (Oklund x Dominard) she had to see a pole fall in the jump-off though giving her the 7th place.

Gregory Wathelet (BEL) did catch the time of Allen, riding Iron Man van de Padenborre (Darco x Chin Chin), but also he had to see a pole fall and ended in 6th position.
