Switzerland's rising star Edouard Schmitz and the 11-year-old mare Babylone des Erables (Chai D x Kashmir van Schuttershof) won Friday's CSIO5* 1.45m VBR-Prize at CHIO Aachen. Stopping the clock on 26.95 in the second phase, the Swiss 22-year-old took the top honours ahead of his compatriot Pius Schwizer (SUI) on Casallino (Casall x Cassini I).

"I've had her for two years, and she is really a fighter, she always tries to give her best," Schmitz said about his winning mount Babylone des Erables. "It was very nice to have a victory in Aachen – a victory in Aachen is always a victory in Aachen and I am very happy to have that off my wish list."

"It was not the most competitive class, but if you don't manage to win in the most competitive classes, then you have to try in the less competitive ones – and that is exactly what I did," Schmitz smiled. "It is great to be here. Everybody tells you how amazing it is and you come here with expectations, but I feel like mine have been exceeed by so much: The arena is amazing, the warm-up is bigger than most show arenas we have in Switzerland – it is just insane. I have the second qualification this afternoon and hopefully I can get a spot for [the Rolex Grand Prix on] Sunday there."

Belgium's Nicola Philippaerts on Khan vd Kattevennen Z (Kannan x Heartbreaker) placed third, while the fourth spot went to Darragh Kenny (IRL) on Rockstar (E Star x C Carnute) and fifth to Pierre Marie Friant (FRA) on Milo vh Dingenshof (Vigo d'Arsouilles x Indian Gold v. Castershoev).
