"My first five-star Nations Cup, winning on home soil, with the Swiss team, with three of my idols – Steve Guerdat, Martin Fuchs and Pius Schwizer – next to me. It was a very special moment," Edouard Schmitz recalls one of his 2022-highlights. Photo © Jenny Abrahamsson for World of Showjumping.

With 2022 coming towards its end, World of Showjumping sat down with Switzerland’s 22-year-old Edouard Schmitz, who took his first ever five-star Grand Prix win in Dublin this summer with Gamin van’T Naastveldhof (Chacco Chacco x Toulon).

Shared joy is double joy

“My favorite moment of the year was the Grand Prix of Dublin,” Edouard begins. “It was my first victory at this level, and it was special because the owner of Gamin, Arturo Fasana, was there. He has put a lot of faith in me and my career and has given me horses that maybe someone with better results could also have ridden. It was really nice to share that moment with him.”

Special moments

“Then St. Gallen is the second on the list: My first five-star Nations Cup, winning on home soil, with the Swiss team, with three of my idols – Steve Guerdat, Martin Fuchs and Pius Schwizer – next to me. It was a very special moment. And of course, the GCL Prague Playoffs. The pressure there was immense, but it also gave me a lot of confidence, to see that I can actually pull off something like that. I have never had to do anything like that before, it was crazy,” Edouard recalls about the round where he went in last with no margin for error, to secure the win in the €4,5 million GCL Super Cup Final for his team Miami Celtics. “The atmosphere was incredible and it was an unreal moment.”

Trust the process

“I think the take away from this year for me is that you have to trust the process,” Edouard continues. “Me and my team have been working in the same way for a couple of years now and it never worked out like it did this year. I think if you enjoy it enough and trust the process, in the end things fall into place.”

Going into the new year, Edouard feels confident. “I think we will need a break to breathe and digest all the strong emotions we were able to enjoy this year,” he smiles. “However, with the string of horses that I have at the moment, next year looks really exciting.”
